Citizenship law

Lawyer for citizenship law in Berlin

For many foreign citizens, residing in Germany for an extended period of time culminates in a desire to take up German citizenship. A “German passport” is required to take part in elections, gives you the freedom to live and reside in all EU countries, allows you to travel to many countries and gives you access to all professions in Germany (especially public service professions).

Advice and representation in the naturalisation process

We can provide comprehensive advice on your chances of naturalisation and manage your naturalisation proceedings before naturalisation authorities in all Länder. The new German Nationality Law 2024 paves the way for dual citizenship and fast-tracked naturalisation after three to five years of residence in Germany – making German citizenship ever more attractive on the international stage.

Where necessary, we can help you verify your identity (alternative spellings of name, no, incomplete or contradictory documents) or citizenship or to determine statelessness in accordance with citizenship law, and we can help you procure the necessary evidence. We have previously represented numerous stateless clients or clients with ambiguous citizenship from Palestine/Syria/Lebanon, Kurdistan and West Africa.

Benefit from our years of legal experience – we can ease the strain of the often lengthy naturalisation process, give you legal certainty and fast track your naturalisation. Where appropriate, we can file an action with the administrative court on the grounds of a failure to decide within a suitable period and force the naturalisation authorities to issue a decision.

Certificate of citizenship and statelessness determination procedure before the Federal Office of Administration

If doubts arise as to the existence of your German citizenship, we can apply for a certificate of citizenship for you and get the Federal Office of Administration to determine whether you have potentially already become a German through your birth or adoption. Born overseas but have German ancestors or were adopted by German citizens under the law of another state? You may be able to acquire German citizenship without naturalisation, such as by submitting a declaration to the relevant citizenship authorities. If German authorities (e.g. the embassy) have treated you as a German citizen for an extended period of time, then a so-called acquisition of German citizenship by prescription may be an option. We can help you with the determination procedure before the Federal Office of Administration and assist with getting the necessary papers and documentation.
